Felting Needle Quick Start

Now some general information about these needles.

  • Felting needles have barbs on each point to bind the fibers of wool
  • Felting needles have barbs on each point to bind the fibers of wool
  • Felting needles come in a variety of forms. They come in triangular, crown, star, twisted, and reversed.
  • when felting go straight in and out with the needle. twisting or bending while in the wool will cause it to break.
  • if the wool is to hard for the needle you need tp go down a size
  • the more barbs the faster the felting, the less barbs the more detailed

Let’s take this easy and start with the most common ones you will find. Triangular. These will come in every kit you get whether it’s from Amazon or Fledgling Felting.

Triangular Needles

Triangular needles come in the most varied sizes. Each one is better for different things.

  • 32- is good for bulk work and making bodies. This will make quick work of heavier fibers.
  • 36- also good for heavier fibers and good for getting the shape of your project down, as well as attaching limbs.
  • 38- a good all around general needle. Can attach limbs and sculpt your body along with larger details.
  • 40-general sculpting focusing more on detail. This needle can be used to erase some of the harsher needle holes in your work.
  • 42- the smallest needle. Good for small details and fine work. Not made for more than details.

Crown needles

Crown needles are the same as triangular needles, but all the barbs are at the very tip of the needle. This makes for really small and good details, these needles will also leave a smoother finish

  • 38- a general all around detail needle.
  • 40-good for hair details
  • 42-good for attaching small details like small bows and making small fingers
  • 46- good for super small details such as bird patterns

Star Needles

Star needles have five points and when looked at straight on, they look like a star.

  • 36-Good for heavier fibers and much faster at felting than a triangular.
  • 38-Good for all around felting, attaching limbs and general large details. Makes felting faster.
  • 38- twisted- This needle is twisted at the end, creating a much faster binding process for the fibers. This one is a good all around needle.

Twisted Needles

Twisted needles are like regular triangular needles but the end is twisted, causing a faster felting process.

  • 38- Good all around general needle, this will felt slightly faster than the triangular version.
  • 40-good for medium sized details such as hands

Reverse needles

Reverse needles have the barbs facing backwards on the needle. This causes wool to be pulled back out from the work.

  • 36- This needle can pull more wool and create things like dog fur or bunny fur.
  • 40-This needle is finer so it can pull of small whisps, good for textures and patches of fur.
